While I've been waiting for the sewing part to come in, I have been practicing hand sewing, but I've also started to make chunky hand-knit blankets. I found tutorials online about how to make them, and I find it very fun and satisfying. It is fun and relaxing, although each blanket takes about 3-4 hours to make. Pictured below are the two blankets I've made/I'm making currently. I enjoy picking out color schemes and seeing what works well together too!

After going to the store with Kelly and buying all of the necessary materials, she lent me her sewing machine and we set it up together. When I was watching the tutorial on how to thread it, I noticed I was missing a piece, so I ordered it, but it won't come until (probably) Wednesday. In the meantime, I am practicing hand sewing by making scrunchies and split t-shirts. I watched tutorials as well as got help from Kelly on different types of sewing stitches and when to use which. Pictured below are a couple of the things I have made. Although they are messy now, I can already feel myself improving and getting more comfortable!

Pre-project blog

I was inspired to learn how to sew after doing research into the garment industry and fast fashion, and learning about the human rights crises that the fashion industry faces. As someone who loves clothing, but didn’t want to support fast fashion, I wanted to create my own clothes from thrifted items and my own old clothes that I don’t wear anymore. I’ve never done anything remotely similar to this before, but I love working with my hands and crafting, so I am excited to start. The first day I will go to a crafting store with my mentor and she will help me pick out supplies and help me get my footing in the sewing world. I am then going to go to her house to pick up her surger to borrow. I am excited to learn, and I hope that sewing is a skill that I can use for my whole life, and make clothes for myself and my friends!
